Youth Group News!!!
We were able to serve with the LCMS in a program called Bringing Hope to the High Country Youth Servant Event Service Opportunities. The service opportunities that our youth were part of were: Avery County Habitat for Humanity… This involved clearing land, building homes, helping in stores, and working at schools in poor communities. The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to provide decent new housing for working families, accomplished by providing no interest loans, and by allowing the down payment to be made in “sweat equity.” The bulk of a Habitat home is built with volunteer labor and financial donations.
Work includes landscaping, building walls and floors, trim work, & painting.
Resort Area Ministries (RAM)
Resort Area Ministries (R.A.M.) in Boone helps needy families with light carpentry to make their homes safer and more functional. Work projects are completed within the four days of our laboring (Monday – Thursday). All work materials come through donations, coordinated by a member of our Youth Servant Event team. The RAM servant team is often involved in some of our most physically demanding projects, such as the installation of new roofs, which is our project this summer.
Mitchell-Yancey Counties Habitat for Humanity & Schools
Mitchell and Yancey Counties have been particularly hard hit by the slow economy. Here we built houses, help in the re-sale stores to raise money to build new houses, and help in the public schools, where budget cuts have been so deep that basic upkeep of the facilities has been neglected. Deep cleaning, painting, landscaping, and other maintenance that we were able to provide during the week helps restore pride in these schools for both staff and students, so that they may work and study in an environment that is joyful and encouraging. We also helped with upkeep of community buildings, including a community garden.
The Crossnore School Vacation Bible School
The Crossnore School has a long-standing mission of providing hope and healing for children and sibling groups whose home life has suffered from serious neglect and abuse, by providing a restorative process that allows children to heal, grow, and receive Christian care. Residents of the school primarily come from the western counties of North Carolina and now live in comfortable cottages with caring adults who provide healthy caring relationships.
We had the joy and privilege of providing a 4-day Vacation Bible School for these children and youth, who range in age from preschool to high school. Opportunities to serve include building relationships, teaching Bible stories through drama, and helping with crafts, skits, music, puppets, and games. This year’s VBS theme is “God’s Miraculous Mission: Jesus Saves the World!” and we will be serving about 75 children and youth from The Crossnore School.
We have a lot of activities planned for our youth in July. On July 7th, we are opening our youth meeting up to the jr. youth. We are going to the Aquatic Center in Kingsport. On July 13th-July 21st, we will have four members of our church head back to Camp Linn Haven for the Middle School Week. Please keep them in your prayers as they grow together in faith. On Saturday, July 28th, our youth will have an end of the summer party. Time and location is TBA. Thank you again for your continued support and prayers in our youth.
